The government has declared Monday January 2 a public holiday.

Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery made the announcement through a gazette notice to the effect that New Year falls on a Sunday.

Section 4 of Public Holidays Act 2011 states that when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day is treated as a holiday.

The constitution defines three national holidays under Section 9.

These are Madaraka Day, marked on June 1, Mashujaa Day on October 20, and Jamhuri Day on December 12.

Kenyans also got a chance to rest on December 27 since the Christmas and Boxing Day fell on Sunday and Monday respectively.
