Dr Peter Kamunyo Gathege has been appointed the news National Social Insurance Fund (NHIF) Chief Executive Officer.

According to the NHIF Board, Dr. Gathege’s appointment takes effect on April 14. following a competitive recruitment process.

Dr. Gathege takes over from Nichodemus Odongo, who has been serving in an acting capacity. Odongo was appointed following the exit of Geoffrey Mwangi, whose reign was marred by graft allegations.

Dr Kamunyo is a health care executive with 21 years’ experience, ranging from clinical practice and healthcare management, and medical insurance, to healthcare supply chain and strategic purchasing and pharmaceutical industry.

Prior to his appointment, Dr Kamunyo was the Chief Executive Officer of MedSource Group Limited. He has also previously worked at GlaxoSmithKline, as the country commercial director, Vaccines and Public Institutions Head.

The NHIF Board has described the incoming CEO as a dynamic leader with a vision and a passion for innovative healthcare solutions to strengthen access, implement quality systems and optimize health outcomes.

He was the General Manager for Aon Insurance Brokers, and also led the Africa Healthcare Practice Group.
