The month of November 2020 has been declared the darkest month since March when the coronavirus pandemic struck the country. While giving daily Covid 19 briefing, Health cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said more than 14, 000 cases of COVID 19 have been recorded in the country since the month begun.

“Since the beginning of the month, we have recorded 14,927 positive cases and lost 274 people”, CS Kagwe announced.

He called for vigilance in adhering within the bounds set by the ministry of health in order to curb more infections.

While giving today’s updates, Kagwe said 559 people had tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, among them, 541 are Kenyans while 18 foreigners . Kenya’s caseload for coronavirus has now reached 70,804 . Total cumulative tests are now 793,026.

CS Kagwe said 278 of the new cases are from Nairobi county with Lang’ata and Starehe estates flagged as having very high new numbers. Imenti North has also emerged as a hotspot with 42 cases emerging from the area. Malindi town has also been flagged as highly infected area with 25 new cases recorded.

Meanwhile 478 patients have recovered from the disease, 337 from the Home-Based Care Program, while 141 have been discharged from various hospitals. The total recoveries now stand at 46,244. Sadly 18 patients have succumbed bringing the death-toll to 1,287.

“As of today, a total of 1,228 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 5,960 are on Home Based Isolation and Care. 64 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 27 of whom are on ventilatory support, and 33 on supplemental oxygen”, CS Kagwe announced.

“Another 97 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 74 are in the general wards, while 23 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU)”, he said.

CS Kagwe has meanwhile said the meeting with doctors’ union addressed issues of Insurance, PPEs, safety of their families and compensation adding that they did not focus on the strike notice issued by the health workers. He said the ministry of health has directed the NHIF to hasten the process of NHIF insurance to health workers by tomorrow.

A total of 2,000 healthcare workers have so far been infected by the coronavirus, with at least 15 nurses and doctors succumbing to the virus. Alfred Obengo, the President of the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK), says the grim statistics has left the medical fraternity in a somber mood.

Obengo has called for dialogue to ensure concerns raised by health care workers who are in the front line in the fight against Covid-19 are addressed, to avert the looming doctors strike whose notice was issued on Sunday, November 15, 2020 by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
