At least 130 girls have been rescued from Female Genital Mutilation in Elgeyo Marakwet County in the past one week.
The rescue was made possible through concerted efforts, with 6 of the girls recuperating at the Iten County Referral Hospital.
Of the number, Marakwet East has the highest number, with poor terrain being cited as a blow to the fight against the practice.
County Anti-FGM Board Chair Mary Soila says they have commenced an anti-fgm campaign targetting men, whom she termed as keepers of culture.
She condemned the recent killing of a police officer who rescued from FGM, terming the act unacceptable.
Soila highlighted the dangers of FGM, and further appealed for continued cooperation to stamp out the practice, which she says goes on secretly in the region.
County Health Executive Michael Kibiwott appealed to the girls to seek treatment in any of the health centres, saying that though the practice has been outlawed, the department will stick to its role of saving lives.
