Family gatherings, workplace interactions, and gatherings related to elections occurring in several countries have been largely blamed for the surge in COVID-19 cases in Africa in the past one week.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti the cases had increased for the past 28 days in 19 countries in the region, including Ghana, Kenya and Angola and Algeria.Speaking at a WHO meeting remotely from the Republic of Congo capital, Brazzaville, Moeti said this has been attributed to the fact that people were starting to relax and not observe restrictions.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports the 54-nation continent passed the two million cases mark this week.
This comes as Kenya recorded 1,048 new COVID 19 infections from tests conducted in the last 24 hours on 8,660 samples tested . This brings to 75,193 the number of confirmed positive cases in the country.
The new cases comprise 1,018 Kenyans and 30 are foreigners. The cumulative tests are now 823,700.
Nairobi leads with 408 new infections followed by Baringo county with 84 new cases. Mombasa has 80 new cases, Kiambu 71, Busia 52, Migori 36, Uasin Gishu 35, Kisumu 25, Machakos 25,Kajiado 23,Siaya 18, Bungoma 15, Kakamega 14.
According to the ministry of health, 326 patients have recovered from the disease, 219 from the Home-Based Care Program, while 107 have been discharged from various hospitals. The total recoveries now stand at 50,984. However, another 19 patients have succumbed to the disease bringing the fatality to 1,349.
